Trump fresh shift on abortion leaves campaign in disarray

The abortion-rights group NARAL Pro-Choice America responded partly tongue-in-cheek to Trump’s comment that abortion laws should be left alone. “We have 28,000 soldiers on the line”, said Trump, who said that rather than fully reimbursing the U.S. for their defense “they pay us peanuts”. He called his comments on “Face the Nation” “perfect” and “so good”.

In an excerpt broadcast on Friday on CBS, Trump said about abortion: “The laws are set”. “Then he will change the law through his judicial appointments and allow the states to protect the unborn”, she said.

The latest furor to surround Trump’s campaign began when he told Matthews there should be “some form of punishment” for women who get abortions if the procedure is outlawed, later adding that what the punishment would be would have to be determined. He walked away from that statement within hours amid bipartisan condemnation, saying if abortion was banned, it would be doctors, not women, facing punishment.

“None of the other candidates would have made that mistake”, said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the Susan B. Anthony List, which supports anti-abortion legislation and candidates.

My personal answer to that question, just for the record, is that we ought to keep abortion legal.

Abortions are still fiercely opposed by many Republicans, four decades after the US Supreme Court affirmed its legality nationwide. Ted Cruz, is ahead by double digits in advance of Tuesday’s vote.

Republican presidential front-runner Donald Trump acknowledged Thursday night that he may have misspoken when he made controversial comments about abortion in an interview earlier this week.
