Obama Kicks Off American Idol Finale with a Call for Voter Registration

“I do believe there is an opportunity to do things differently and see what a revamped next generation “American Idol” might look like”, he said. Seacrest (is nearly totally) out.

Here’s the blunt truth about what “American Idol” was best at: It wasn’t a singing competition as much as a balancing act. It was then time for Ryan Seacrest to deliver the results and the two artists performing for the title, which were Trent Harmon and La’Porsha Renae. If history is any indication, there’s some real emotion to come…unless this year’s pick takes after Taylor Hicks, who delivered a single “woo!” upon his crowning in 2006.

Dunkleman left Idol after the first season came to a close to persue an acting career and has admitted in the past that he didn’t expect the show to become the cultural phenomenon that it did. This will serve to reminisce the past 15 seasons of the show.

Were you a fan of Simon Cowell when he was an American Idol judge?

The following night, America’s most crucial – and last-ever – vote will take place when the remaining finalists battle it out live from Dolby Theatre on Wednesday, April 6 (8:00-9:00 PM ET live/PT tape-delayed).

Tonight’s two-hour finale will feature a parade of winners, past contestants and judges, all coming together to bid goodbye to a TV show that changed the pop culture landscape – and the music business – forever. Behind the scenes, everyone got laryngitis, including Kelly Clarkson on the fateful night she sang Céline Dion’s “I Surrender”.

As judge Harry Connick Jr. put it, “It’s designed as a search for a musical pop superstar, and that’s exactly what it’s done”.

Season seven contestant David Hernandez already is feeling a sense of loss. But “Idol” producers – whom Simon said he remains friendly with – have struggled to find a panel of judges to match the original chemistry and the panel has had many faces since he and Abdul departed.

“I’ve been all over the world with countless legends”, said Ruben Studdard. “When Simon made a decision to go, all of us weren’t quite sure what the meant for the show”, Seacrest said. The first season had a 1-800 number, and the second added texting – a technology so new that Seacrest had to teach viewers how to do it.

Although “American Idol” comes to an end this week, Fuller held out the hope that it may return one day.

While Cowell’s barbed criticism of contestants helped drive the show’s popularity, it also made for a rocky start with Abdul, who favored a more nurturing approach with the show’s young talent. Lambert acknowledged that the show allowed him to go straight to the people instead of having to just go through business people.
