The American Heart Association says the day is a good reminder to get moving.

Officials with the Boilermaker Road Race and the Heart Association took part in a ceremonial walk along Court and Varick Streets, ending at the Boilermaker Finish Line. All minutes posted there will count toward a national total goal of 100,000 minutes walked.

“We’re encouraging everyone that visits downtown Norfolk, that works in downtown Norfolk or lives here, to walk the path every single day, for 30 minutes a day”, she added. All these changes help to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and stroke, Iowa’s number 1 and number 5 killers.

“More than 67 percent of American adults are considered overweight and obese and almost 70 percent are not engaging in regular physical activity”, Mason said in a news release.
