Offensive tackle Jonathan Martin on Monday made the surprise decision to retire at the age of 25.

The Panthers, who added Martin off waivers in March, had penciled him in as Michael Oher’s backup at left tackle.

In his lone season with the 49ers last year, Martin started nine games in place of right tackle Anthony Davis. He was set to count roughly $1 million against the 2015 salary cap.

The 25-year-old Martin was a second-round draft pick of the Dolphins in 2012 and started all 16 games for them as a rookie and seven more games in 2013 before the bullying incident, which caused a much-publicized investigation into the Dolphins’ locker room culture. An independent report by investigator Ted Wells deemed that Incognito, John Jerry and Mike Pouncey consistently harassed Martin – who had been bullied in high school and said he considered suicide in 2013 – which included racial slurs and sexually explicit comments about his sister.

He was placed on injured reserve for the final five regular-season games after suffering a knee injury and was limited throughout offseason workouts.

Six tackles remain on Carolina’s roster: Oher, Mike Remmers, Daryl Williams, Nate Chandler, Martin Wallace and David Foucault.
