It extended heartfelt sympathies and condolences to the government and people of India and wished for early recovery of injured persons.

Superintendent of Police Baljit Singh succumbed to injuries suffered in the gun battle between security forces and terrorists who were holed up in the complex, officials said.

The attack killed at least three civilians, and three police officers. The terrorists then went straight to a police station, killing policemen, before taking positions.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh called a high level meeting in New Delhi on Monday evening to discuss security situation in the country in the wake of Gurdaspur terror attack.

Local resident Kamaljeet Singh Matharu, who said that the assailants had snatched his vehicle after firing at him, said they were dressed in army uniform and were heavily armed.

The attack continued for many hours as commandos and police deployments were rushed to flush out the militants. “They are not Kashmiris”, he told Reuters by telephone.

Sandwiched between two rivers, Gurdaspur is Punjab state’s northernmost district, and is close to Pakistan.

It was the first major attack in India’s Punjab for more than a decade and the state’s Chief Minister Prakash Singh Badal blamed a lack of security on the border.

Meanwhile, the Pakistani government has condemned the siege, amid accusations by Indian officials that the attackers crossed the border from Pakistan.

Punjab has been the target of terrorist attacks since the early 1980s, largely by Sikh militant groups demanding an independent homeland, Khalistan. DGP said alert has also been sounded among intelligence agencies and other deployments in the areas.

Indian and Pakistan have fought three wars since their independence from the British colonial rule in 1947.

The security forces also found five improvised explosive devices (IEDs) near the railway track at the Dinanagar railway station but the bombs did not detonate despite a train passing over them because of improperly connected wires. I have ordered the force to take all necessary steps for the security of people and increase vigil at key public places across the state, Gujarat Director General of Police P C Thakur told.
