Political Prediction Market: Trump, Cruz almost tied for nomination

A statement from Trump’s campaign dismissed Wisconsin primary victor Ted Cruz as a tool of the larger Republican Party seeking to sabotage Trump’s campaign.

“It is a call from the hard-working men and women of Wisconsin to the people of America”, Cruz said. We have a choice. Sanders won the Democratic presidential primary in Wisconsin Tuesday.

But Trump was unbowed.

“Ted Cruz is worse than a puppet – he is a Trojan horse, being used by the party bosses attempting to steal the nomination from Mr Trump”, the Trump campaign said.

Sanders’s sweeping win in virtually every county in Wisconsin, except Milwaukee, gives him greater incentive to keep competing against Clinton. This questioned has dogged the former secretary of state throughout the primary campaign.

For the Sanders campaign, winning the Wyoming caucus on Saturday and moving into the NY primary riding the wave of numerous consecutive victories is strategically key.

For Sanders, Wisconsin was favorable territory, with an overwhelming white electorate and liberal pockets of voters. It’s good momentum, but it could easily be sapped as the race moves to Hillary Clinton’s home state of NY. The fact that her team just opened a campaign headquarters in IN is an indication they expect the primary to be a long one. But he still lags significantly behind Clinton in the all-important delegate count. Those numbers suggest that while a Sanders upset is far from impossible, his best hope is a narrow victory – but even a slight win wouldn’t fundamentally alter the delegate math.

Wisconsin voters headed to the polls Tuesday amid a campaign in which anti-establishment sentiment is on the rise. Of more concern to the billionaire businessman were network exit polls reported by CNN that said 58 percent of GOP primary voters were concerned or scared about a Trump presidency.

A total of 2,383 delegates are needed to secure the Democratic ticket.

But they also may have awakened a little more anxious.

Sanders leads Clinton by two points, 49 percent to 47 percent, in the poll, which was conducted March 29 through March 31. Ted Cruz and Gov. John Kasich neck and neck for second place, with 20 and 19 points respectively. He must win 57 percent of remaining delegates to win the nomination.

By changing the delegate allotment from winner-take-all to proportional, Proud said that more candidates will want to make an effort to win over support even if they won’t win the whole batch. The state GOP begins selecting delegates next week.

This raises the prospect of a contested convention in July when the delegates meet to choose the party nominee for the November presidential election.
