It is not clear what the pair were doing at the school after hours. “Currently no threat to the community or the school was detected”.
After Thousand Oaks High School notified families about the death of an 18-year-old student in an accidental explosion on Monday night at Madrona Elementary School, parents still seek an explanation for the tragedy.
His 17-year old friend was injured but is reportedly now in a stable condition.
Sheriff’s Detective Timothy Loman said Tuesday that the teens built the rocket and attached it to the skateboard as a propulsion device.
Last November, a Boy Scout troop leader was accidentally killed when a homemade rocket hit him in the face San Bernardino County – about 160 miles east of where Monday’s deadly mishap occurred.
“He was a friend to many and the school is devastated today”, according to the statement by the Thousand Oaks High School Alumni Association.
It was unclear whether anyone was trying to ride the skateboard at the time, he said. The incident is still under investigation.
The other boy, a 17-year-old, had minor injuries, authorities said.
Both teens were taken to Los Robles Hospital, which is only a few blocks from the school, following the explosion, Paris said.
The blast occurred on a courtyard at Madrona Elementary School. “And he loved science really”, she said.
Katie Elias was also at the meeting and, with another parent, rushed to the two students to render first aid.
“As people started hearing the word, they didn’t know how to react. She didn’t want to let go of his neck because he was bleeding so bad”.
He said investigators did determine the rocket was about 1 foot long and about ¾-inch in diameter.
“Our hearts are broken”, according to a tweeted message from Thousand Oaks High School.
Moon, who was described as “brilliant ” by Coburn, had placed at the Ventura County Science Fair in 2014 and 2015″.
“I’m sure he planned everything out as properly as he could”, the friend said.
