U.S. election: Donald Trump aide charged with assault

Still, Trump and his campaign say Fields was a threat and had to be removed from her spot next to the candidate.

“The photographs, audio, videos, and witness accounts documenting the treatment of Michelle Fields by Corey Lewandowski, Donald Trump’s campaign manager, are inexcusable and unprofessional”, they added.

“I think she would have pressed charges anyway, because I think she likes it”, Trump said. I’m sure there will be a counter-claim coming down the line.

Trump cast doubt on her claims, telling reporters that he doubts her claims that she suffered bruises from Lewandowski.

The odd saga began earlier this month when Fields and others asserted Lewandowski had seized her arm with enough force to leave bruises at a press scrum in Florida.

“Seriously, just stop lying”, she told Trump on Twitter.

Trump insisted that Fields was “hardly even touched”.

Brad Cohen, Lewandowski’s lawyer, said “the police report doesn’t match the video” of the incident. “He is completely confident that he will be exonerated”, Trump said through a spokesperson on Tuesday.

Trump, a NY real estate magnate, is front-runner to be the Republican nominee after running an insurgent campaign that has alarmed many in the party establishment.

Mrs Clinton said Ms Fields “deserves a lot of credit for following through on the way she was physically handled at an event”. It was a stretch, to say the least, and the article only remained on the site for a few hours before C-SPAN footage showed that Lewandowski had, in fact, reached for Fields’s arm.

“I watched as a man with short-cropped hair and a suit grabbed her arm and yanked her out of the way”.

Donald Trump’s White House rivals rounded on the billionaire after his campaign manager was charged with assaulting a reporter, accusing him of “inciting violence” and fostering an “abusive culture”.

Trump’s most recent defense of Lewandowski suggests he thought there may have been a security gap that could have allowed a reporter to bring a weapon into the ballroom where he was speaking and allowed the same reporter to get too close to him. And she was running up and grabbing and asking questions. I quickly turned around and saw Lewandowski and Trump exiting the building together.

“(Fields) said she went to the ground, or something to the effect of she nearly went to the ground”, Trump said at a March 29 CNN town hall.

In a statement, Mr Trump stood by his campaign manager, saying he was “absolutely innocent” of the charge.
