Adult diabetes has nearly quadruped since 1980
“Diabetes is a lifestyle problem, I would strongly recommend 150 minutes per week walking and eating from the farm as much as possible fresh fruits and vegetables should top the chart”, said Dr Sujeet Jha Director Endocrinology, Diabetes and Obesity, Max Healthcare.

The study did not differentiate between type 1 and type 2 diabetes, but most (85-95%) of cases of adult diabetes are type 2 so the observed rise is likely to be due to increases in type 2 diabetes. Diabetes prevalence there is up to 13.7 percent, from 5.9 percent.
-Prevalence of diabetes was highest in Polynesia and Micronesia (age-adjusted prevalence is over 20 percent in men and women). By 2014, they had yielded their slots to such low- and middle-income countries as Indonesia, Pakistan, Mexico and Egypt.
For years, researchers and health agencies have warned that urbanization and the influx of cheap, sugary, and processed foods into low- and middle-income countries are linked to the surge in non-communicable diseases, including diabetes and obesity. Nearly half of all people with this type of diabetes are not aware that they are suffering from it. Those who have a family history of diabetes, unhealthy diet, physical inactivity, obesity, high blood pressure, history of diabetes during pregnancy are at increased risk of developing the disease. Among women in 1980, 4.3% had diabetes.
World Health Organization officials can’t quite say why that is. Globally, between 1980 and 2014, diabetes has become more common among men than women.
Symptoms of diabetes include frequent urination, increased thirst and appetite, body weakness, weight loss, tingling sensation or numbness in the hands or feet and blurring of vision. “At the other end, rural local governments are reluctant to “go urban” because local politicians see more funds coming their way through rural development schemes”, it said.
Instead, Bermuda, like most countries, is contending with a spike in type 2 diabetes. The diabetes association, which has long made prevention its primary focus, has now been joined by the Ministry of Health, insurers and other private and public agencies in putting the causes of the disease at the forefront of the struggle.
Diabetes is a chronic disease that occurs when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin or when the body can not effectively use the insulin it produces.
She says it is time to join together to “step up and beat diabetes”.
Health experts don’t know how to prevent Type 1 diabetes, which is characterized by the insufficient production of insulin, a regulator of blood sugar. “The “easy” solution is for all of us to exercise, eat healthily and not gain excess weight – of course it’s not so easy.” as it called for governments to regulate the fat and sugar content of foods to ensure there were healthy options available to people.
Shin said China had some major gaps in access to services for early detection, treatment and management of diabetes.

Directly and indirectly, diabetes claims millions of lives around the world every year and is crippling national health budgets. Many countries have set a goal of reducing diabetes by one third by 2030.
