Microsoft looking to support ad blockers in Edge web browser

“We are not building a native ad blocker within MS Edge, but we will support third-party ad blockers like AdBlock and AdBlock Plus”, Rossi tweeted.

“It remains to be seen how the new ad-blocking features will work”.

The move follows Opera’s announcement this month that it was introducing ad-blocking features directly into its desktop computer browser. The information comes from a session titled “Microsoft Edge: What’s Next for Microsoft’s New Browser and Web Platform” that was held during Microsoft’s BUILD conference and spotted by Ed Bott from ZDNet. We’re glad that Microsoft has chose to step forward to clarify the matter and put it to rest, hopefully for good. Toward the end of previous year, Apple, brought the concept to most its “i” users by allowing its latest version of its own browser, Safari, to carry third party adblockers.

Internet ads have become a notable annoyance for a lot of web users, especially with the development and emergence of automatic pop-ups and other forms of aggressive advertisements. Microsoft may be adding one to the Windows 10 Edge browser as well.

As of last December, all versions of Microsoft’s Internet Explorer combined accounted for about 15 percent of browsers used across the globe. Right at the top of the list is reference to plans to create a plugin and extension store for Edge, but it’s entry number four that’s more intriguing.

This started rumors that the company was working on a built-in ad blocking feature for the browser, which Microsoft Edge engineer Jacob Rossi debunked on Twitter.

This isn’t just about blocking annoying ads. The smaller browsers Opera and fearless are already incorporating ad blocking options. “But with new features expected to arrive in Windows 10 preview builds in the coming weeks, we probably will know soon”. So I totally get both sides of the debate over ad blocking. Microsoft will also be going over Windows Hello integration with Edge.
