The Lowell fire, a blaze that engulfed over a thousand acres in Sierra Nevada foothills this weekend has injured four firefighters and threatens more than a hundred homes.

A fire in El Dorado National Forest that burned 75 acres near Kyburz on a heavily used route between Sacramento and Lake Tahoe was almost contained.

“With such steep terrain, we’re really depending on air drops”, she said. A federal firefighter had serious, non-life threatening injuries and remained hospitalized, state fire spokeswoman Mary Ann Aldrich said.

Residents of Red Dog Road and You Bet Road are under mandatory evacuation orders, along with those on Chalk Bluff and Lowell Hill roads. Cal Fire officials said the winds and the lower temperatures might help crews on Monday, even though “access to the fire is very challenging”.

Here is a look at wildfires burning around the West. No structures have been damaged or destroyed.

Two state firefighters and a U.S. Forest Service member were treated and released.

The fire appeared to slow down and headed west after burning south since starting Saturday afternoon.

“The aircraft actually made a good stop here and bought us enough time to get in here and get our lines deployed and put out the littler fires”, CAL FIRE Capt. Wayne Hamblin told KCRA Sacramento. Cal Fire says the blaze is five percent contained. Authorities have organized a shelter for evacuees at the Nevada Union High School, located in Grass Valley, California.

“With the system we have developed here in Nevada and eastern California, I think we are on the cusp of a new era in the way we fight fires”, said Graham Kent, director of the lab at the University of Nevada, Reno which tied the communication network into the system it uses to monitor seismic activity and climactic conditions.
