Prince William and his wife, the former Kate Middleton, began their first engagement in India by laying a wreath at a memorial Sunday at Mumbai’s iconic Taj Mahal Palace hotel, where 31 victims of the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks were killed.
They then paid tribute to those who died in the 2008 terror attacks, and laid a wreath of white flowers at the hotel’s memorial.
But before the festivities, the royal couple stopped by the Taj Hotel in Mumbai, which was destroyed during the 2008 terror attacks.
In Bhutan, the royal couple will meet the king and queen of the remote Himalayan kingdom. While William asked him to explain what happened on the day of the attacks, Kate said: “It must have been a surreal time”.
Before continuing their tour, the couple will enjoy a private lunch of vegetable kebabs and lentil curry made by the Taj Mahal Palace chef, Raghu Deora.
And this evening they will be joined by Bollywood and sporting royalty during a charity fundraising reception and dinner staged in Mumbai – the home of India’s famous film industry – to celebrate the city’s movie and creative industries.
Announced during Prime Minister Modis visit to the United Kingdom late previous year, this tour builds on the strong bonds between the two countries. “I think it’s a big honour to be there and introduce them and be nice”, said Shah Rukh Khan.
Taught by the Door Step School, which provides classes for children who work to help support their families, 25 pupils will be among youngsters from other charities who will attend an open-air cricket event with the Duke and Duchess.

“The Duke and Duchess are very much looking forward to the tour”, Kensington Palace, the official residence of the royal couple, tweeted on Friday. Cricket legends Sachin Tendulkar and Dilip Vengsarkar will host the couple at Oval Maidan in Mumbai where they will watch a cricket match played by members of NGOs.
