Stephen Curry had 37 points and the Warriors beat the San Antonio Spurs 92-86 Sunday night for their 72nd win, tying the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls for the season record.

San Antonio star Tim Duncan was held out for the Spurs’ game against Golden State on Sunday night. The chess match between these two elite teams continues for one more regular season matchup on Sunday.

Sunday’s Golden State Warriors vs San Antonio Spurs game is arguably the biggest regular season basketball game of recent memory.

Make no mistake: this was a 10-out-of-10 on the difficulty scale. The Bulls still need to win their final two games and hope IN drops their remaining three IN order to avoid missing the playoffs for the first time since 2008.

10-out-of-10 probably doesn’t do this game justice.

The Warriors returned to Oakland immediately after the game.

Neither will the Warriors, who have made it abundantly clear that they want those 73 wins.

Despite some early turnovers, the Dubs were locked-in early. They handed their fiercest rival the only home loss of the season, denying San Antonio a chance to top the ’85-’86 Celtics (40-1 at home) for the league record. And yet, this year’s may be the best San Antonio Spurs team Gregg Popovich (five titles since ’99) has put on the court.

The problem was the number of possessions. The first half was a raw battle, tied at 35 at the break. They won straight-up as the greatest 3.5-point underdogs the league may ever see. But it’s moment at that unique point while in the game, as Stephen Curry checked back into the game, couldn’t happen to be more interesting. The Warriors won even with the porous shooting of Steph Curry and Klay Thompson, who together scored just 34 points, 14-38 shooting and 5-24 on three pointers. And on the road, on the second part of a back-to-back, that’s usually a recipe for disaster. Officials reviewed the play and gave the ball to the Warriors with 0.8 seconds to finish off the comeback. And in that moment, the MVP decided it was his turn. Golden State’s last regular-season win in the Alamo City was a 108-94 victory on February 14, 1997.

“Just play hard”, Green said to his staff of his meaning. “This game meant a lot to us”, Curry said when asked about the importance of their 71 win. A flawless end to the weekend in the Bay Area. Conley is averaging 15 points and 6 assists this season.
