School performs emotional Haka at teacher’s funeral in New Zealand

Students at a High School in New Zealand performed a mesmerising rendition of the Haka in memory of their teacher who passed away earlier this month.

Palmerston North Boys’ High School rector David Bovey told ONE News: “It was absolutely spine-tingling” witnessing the haka.

Mr Tamatea, who taught physical education and maths, worked at the school for nearly 30 years after joining the teaching staff in 1986.

But the hearse is stopped in its tracks as all 1700 students plus a group of recent old boys perform an emotional haka that lasts for about two minutes.

“This was a very emotional and powerful performance”.

“This complex dance is an expression of the passion, vigour and identity of the race”, according to a description on the All Blacks’s website, and “a custom of high social importance in the welcoming and entertainment of visitors”.

Tamatea was also involved in several sports at the school including tennis, basketball, and softball.

This is was truely a moving and very fitting send off for Mr Tamatea.

A New Zealand school has honored a late teacher with national pride and unity. “We’re all gonna miss you”.
