A bomb in the Shiite village of Sitra killed two Bahraini police officers Tuesday, AFP reported, only days after the country said it had foiled an attempted arms smuggling plot connected with Iran.

“Early information suggests that the explosives used in today’s terrorist attack are of the same type that were recently intercepted coming from Iran”, BNA said.

Five other policemen were lightly to moderately injured and were being treated in hospital, the ministry said.

Bahrain is a Sunni-ruled kingdom that is home to the U.S. Navy’s 5th Fleet, whose responsibilities include patrolling the busy waters off Iran. Iran invalidates intruding in Bahrain but widely holds up critical individual groups searching for higher way because of its Shi’ite neighborhood. It continues to face low-level unrest more than four years after a Shiite-dominated opposition movement took to the streets to demand greater political rights.
