Batman v Superman set to be less profitable than Man of Steel

R-rated local thriller “Insane” debuted on top of the Korean box office, ousting “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice”. That Disney cartoon feature was in third place this weekend, at $14.4 million, and has $296 million in the bank in the U.S.-Canadian market from its six weeks worth of showing.

Previously, it has been reported that the film will need to break $925 million to land a profit.

It’s probably a safe bet to state WB expected Batman Vs. Superman to hit a billion – especially with adding Batman into the movie – as Nolan’s two previous Batman movies scored over a billion.

Whatever the final outcome, neither The Boss nor Batman v Superman seem likely to extend their rule into next weekend.

Affleck said “Batman v Superman” – which has been slammed by critics – is a “movie that has substance”. Despite poor reviews and word of mouth, “Batman v Superman” has earned an estimated $296.7 million to date. And the first-person live-action shooter Hardcore Henry, hailed by some as a new cinematic genre, took fifth place with US$5 million. Then on Saturday, “Batman v Superman” rebounded by taking in .6 million over the comedy’s $10 million. “It’s one of the closest results between first- and second-place films I’ve ever seen”.

The next films in the DCEU will be “Suicide Squad”, premiering on August 5, and “Wonder Woman”, which will be released on June 2, 2017. Finishing in top spot – at least through estimates – is The Boss, Universal’s fourth Melissa McCarthy release, after smaller roles in Bridesmaids and This is 40 and the lead in Identity Thief and The Boss. In China, Zootopia has soared to $232.2M allowing it to surpass Avengers: Age of Ultron to become the third biggest Hollywood blockbuster of all-time there behind Furious 7 and Transformers: Age of Extinction.

Faith-based hit Miracles from Heaven declined by 34% to an estimated $4.8M and Sony has taken in a solid $53.9M overall. Now, this movie is fighting to beat the jungle book movie 2016.

“Kung Fu Panda 3”, $11.4 million. The studio is a unit of NBC Universal, part of Comcast Corp.
