Pool fire at The Cosmopolitan fueled by fake palm trees
The Cosmopolitan hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip reopened on Sunday, a day after a cabana on the resort’s rooftop pool caught fire and sent thick black smoke through the air, leading to two injuries and a partial evacuation of the building. The pool area was quickly evacuated, and no one was injured during the fire, but there are reportedly two cases of smoke inhalation that were treated at a nearby hospital.

It is believed the fire started at the bamboo pool, but no cause of the trigger has been determined as of yet.
“We did have smoke on multiple floors throughout the hotel”.
“These codes, combined with the professional efforts of our firefighters, worked to keep the fire contained primarily to the outdoor areas of the building, with the exception of one lanai located on the pool deck that sustained some fire damage”, the county release said.
Investigation is still under way regarding the start of the fire. “Had we not had the wind, this might have been a much smaller problem”.
“We did not have any fire inside”, Cassel assured the Review-Journal while praising the fire department and its firefighters who are “very, very good at what they do”.
String lights were hung from the trees, but Durkin says it’s unclear if the cause of the fire might have been electrical. Workers of the Cosmopolitan were in a panic screaming ‘The building is on fire!
County codes regulate the use of cabanas and temporary outdoor shelters but not decorations such as faux palm trees or patio furniture.
“We were in the pool, saw flames and everyone scrambled”, she said.
The fire department responded with about 100 personnel including several chiefs, 13 engines, four trucks and other vehicles dousing the noon-time fire in about 30 minutes.
