The SLFP police union told the BBC that security measures put in place for the reopening were insufficient. In addition to reviewing who has access to secure areas of the airport, police are also concerned about a lack of security personnel and the fact that there is no 100-meter buffer zone between vehicles and the departure area.
He called for metal detectors, body scanners and x-ray machines to screen people outside the building.
Airport closure Meanwhile Brussels airport will remain closed until at least Thursday afternoon, authorities confirmed, as further tests continue at the airport which was badly damaged by last week’s attacks.
“I don’t think that the plan going forward by… any European government or airport operator, would be to set up checkpoints at the entrance ways to the airport”, she said.
“We represent the union of all the religious communities of this country”, said Salah Echallaoui, president of the umbrella organization for government-authorized mosques and Islamic organizations.
Defence Minister Steven Vandeput said a balance needed to be found between economic needs and security needs.
“They worked cleaning at the airport and in a restaurant”, the man said.
Feist said he hopes the airport terminal heavily damaged in the bombings can be rebuilt in time to restore full capacity by the start of the summer vacation season.
Furthermore, airport police complained that some airport employees had criminal backgrounds, while others could be ISIS sympathizers.
Since the attacks, thousands of passengers have had to be rerouted to nearby airports in and around Belgium and hotel bookings have plummeted as tourists stay away, either out of fear or to avoid the travel disruptions. The guy, pictured wearing a hat, was said to have fled the scene.
As the search continued for up to two suspects believed to have participated directly in the March 22nd attacks, speculation continued about the identity of the third suicide bomber captured in airport CCTV footage minutes before the attacks.
The chancellery is also next door to the U.S. embassy and on the same street as Maelbeek metro station, where Khalid El Bakraoui blew himself up.
The Zaventem facility was shut since a double suicide bomb attack on the departures hall on 22.
