Tesla reveals the all-electric Model 3, deliveries to begin in 2017

Tesla claims a base model of the new electric auto will deliver at least 215 miles of electric range, go from zero to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds and have a base price of $35,000.

After the auto was yesterday unveiled at a press event in the States, the company CEO Elon Musk took to Twitter to announce the additional countries that will see the Model 3.

As of last night, Tesla had already received 115,000 orders for the Model 3, with customers putting down $1,000 deposits.

Musk said the Model 3 will seat five comfortably, and he emphasized “comfortably”. By the end of 2017, when the Model 3 launches, Tesla says it will have a total of 7,200 Superchargers, double the number available today. The four-door vehicles have no grille and also feature a roof that is a panoramic pane of glass from front to back. Within a half hour, that number reached 137,600 in a rolling scroll projected onto a screen. A couple of spec from Model X and Model S have been included in Model 3, such as Autopilot.

“I have a feeling this is going to be one of the best cars ever made”, said one person waiting outside a Tesla store in Manhattan to put in their reservation.

The vehicle will also come with supercharging as standard (a faster means of fueling up the car).

Right now, Tesla sells two vehicles: The Model S sedan, which starts at $71,000, and the Model X SUV, which starts around $80,000.

Musk says he’s “fairly confident” the Model 3 will be ready by the end of 2017.

“LG Display is a sole supplier for the 15-plus inch center display of Model 3”, said the source, declining to be identified as he was not authorized to speak on the matter.

Prospective buyers were lining up at Tesla Stores globally yesterday ahead of the world reveal, including pictured here at the company’s dealership in West Drayton near Heathrow. The Model 3 is the culmination of a decade’s worth of work.
