Tesla recalling 2700 Model X SUVs for seat defect

Tesla said it is recalling all the Model X vehicles it manufactured before March 26, which makes up roughly 2,700 units. “If a recliner were to slip during a crash, the seat back could move forward”, Tesla said in an email to owners of the luxury SUV with gull-wing rear doors.

The company has received no reports of seat failures from customers, but Tesla says customers shouldn’t use the third row until it’s repaired.

Tesla Motors announced Monday it is voluntarily recalling its Model X sport utility vehicles for a defective latch in the third-row seat. The company also offers electric vehicle powertrain components and systems to other manufacturers.

Tesla has had two previous seat safety recalls. Tesla said Futuris will cover the cost of replacing the seat back.

The Model X recall “is out of an abundance of caution for our customers”, Jon McNeil, Tesla’s president of sales and service, told reporters on a conference call Monday.

In November, Tesla recalled all Model S vehicles delivered before Nov. 19 over an issue related to the front seat belt, which could prevent it from functioning properly.

None of the three problems led to any incidents or accidents in on-road use of any Tesla electric cars, and industry analysts generally credit the Silicon Valley maker for being aggressively proactive in its recall strategy.

Going by recent (but now deleted) tweets from Tesla CEO Elon Musk, the Model X online configurator is slated to go live on the company’s website today.

The seats themselves are also likely to see an upgrade, borrowing from the Model X, which features the availability of heated and cooled seats in place of the heated-only seats of the Model S.

When driving in ‘Autopilot’ mode, which allows the Model S to drive with no human input on stretches of main road, the road animation changes to a multi-coloured Rainbow Road-style track.
