President Zuma Celebrates 74th Birthday Amid Growing Opposition

Yesterday, Sports Minister and senior ANC official Fikile Mbalula said the Constitutional Court finding that President Zuma broke his oath of office was open to interpretation and didn’t mean he had to resign. The outcome of this consultation process will be discussed with the ANC national leadership.

The 74-year-old president survived an impeachment vote in the legislature last week, but calls for him to step down by veteran ANC members as well as church, civil society and business leaders have intensified.

“South Africa has already experienced a presidential recall which failed to deliver strategies required to address the systemic imperative”.

The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng says the issue surrounding the mismanagement of President Jacob Zuma’s Nkandla homestead must be tackled head on, adding it’s not being factional or insulting Zuma, but instead has a different view from other branches.

Zuma has said he would abide by the ruling and repay the money. Mantashe scolded religious leaders for being praise singers. “It’s not about the ANC; it’s about the president choosing what is better for the country”. “Protecting this lifeblood is at the heart of Nelson Mandela’s legacy”, the foundation said.

It follows a ruling by the Constitutional Court that the president should adhere to the remedial actions of the public protector and pay back tax payers funds which were used for non-security upgrades worth millions at his Nkandla home.

Moela said that South African Communist Party secretary-general Blade Nzimande should raise issues about the Guptas’ alleged state capture in the national executive, of which he was a member.

“The party is defending Zuma in an increasingly hard political climate and this protection of Jacob Zuma will create further tension within the ANC itself and it would polarize those within the ANC who wish to see Zuma continues and those who wish to see him replaced earlier rather than later”, Silke said.

President Zuma’s own presidency has been riddled with controversy.

“Those who really fought for our liberation suffered and died and all those people who brought us to 1994 are in tears”, said Albertina Luthuli.
