Florida Republicans Push Obama on Iranian Currency Sanctions

Undersecretary Thomas Shannon insisted that the “rumors” that Iran was free to make transactions in U.S. dollars with the elimination of the nuclear sanctions was not true, and that there were no plans to allow Iran to do so.

Toner referred to President Barack Obama’s comments last week that businesses that do want to deal with Iran in dollars could do so through European banks.

Tehran agreed a deal on curbing its nuclear work in July a year ago and worldwide sanctions were lifted in January.

“While full implementation of the (nuclear agreement) will ensure that Iran is unable to develop a nuclear warhead to place on a missile, we will continue to use all available multilateral and unilateral tools, including sanctions, when appropriate, to impede Iran’s ballistic missile program”, Shannon said.

They say it would send a strong message to Tehran that Washington condemns its ballistic missile tests, support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and other actions contrary to US interests.

AIPAC called for “crippling sanctions” that would “cast a wider net and target entities providing material support to Iran’s illicit ballistic missile program, including within financial and transportation services”.

In one dispute, congressional leaders are concerned that the administration no longer considers recent Iranian ballistic missile tests a “violation” of United Nations Security Council Resolution 2231, which codifies the nuclear deal.

Iran’s media reported on Thursday that the country’s exports to the United States increased six times over a period of 11 months starting March 2015.

The committee’s hearing was held amid the reports that the administration may relax the prohibition that prevents US dollars from being used in transactions with Iran.

He said, “If they’re cheating, we will know it”. Iran hasn’t talked much about acquiring new warplanes so far since the deal came into effect, but the age of the F-4s means that they’ll need to be replaced eventually. In the article’s estimation, this is a deliberate effort to avoid the JCPOA being perceived by Iranian citizens as a bridge to more general engagement with the global community.

During his appearance on MSNBC, Kerry said Iran is entitled to the full range of sanctions relief under the nuclear accord.

“I believe it violated the intent of [U.N. Security Council Resolution] 2231”.

The sale is not prohibited under the existing UN Security Council resolutions, as S-300 is considered a purely defensive system, Shannon said, noting that the USA has “made it very clear to the Russians that we consider this to be a bad move”. Bob Corker (R-Tenn.), he said he hoped the committee for its part would not be “frozen”, but would act, both in pursuing missile sanctions but also in reauthorizing the Iran Sanctions Act.
