Exam leeway at Srinagar NIT

Two companies of CRPF had been deployed earlier and three companies of Sashastra Seema Bal joined them after campus violence in the last few days, which began after a group of students celebrated West Indies’ win over India in the World T20 semifinal.

He said that the Ministry of Human Resource Development has sent a team to the state to assess the situation.

Jammu: Several organisations including JKNPP, JPPF and Sri Ram Sena today called for Jammu bandh today in protest against the alleged police action on outstation students at NIT in Srinagar.

A secure environment should be created for these students, he said, noting that the Centre was in touch with the state government over the matter.

Classes resumed this week but on Tuesday night the non-Kashmiri students attempted to march out of the campus and were stopped at the main gate by police.

“We demand intervention and reply from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the safety and security of the non-Kashmiri students studying in NIT Srinagar following use of the brute force by the police”, he said.

He said the Additional District Magistrate of Srinagar will conduct the inquiry and submit his report within 15 days.

On Wednesday, a section of students from Bihar and Rajasthan studying at NIT, Srinagar had been beaten up by the police near the campus for raising “Bharat Mata ki Jai” slogans. The outstation students have been alleging that they are not being allowed to step outside the campus by the local police.

Witnesses said that in the ensuing clashes, teargas shells were burst as cops charged with batons, leaving many students with cuts and bruises. They demanded that we should leave the meeting.

Added Yehya: “Good common people who we serve may be alienated with us for reasons more than one, and our good work shall certainly help us win their hearts”.

Asked about his comment that students were subjected to “mild lathicharge”, Singh said his statement at that time was based on information he had received.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Deputy Chief Minister Nirmal Singh assured that the students at the varsity are safe and will be unharmed, while asserting that those responsible for attacking the students will not be spared.

Irked over anti-India slogans, non-Kashmiri students complained to the director of the institute, after which clashes erupted.

Speaking to ANI, he said that the controversy surrounding the issue of “Kashmiri versus non-Kashmiri students” was redundant as there was no such issue prevalent.
