The state government, controlled by the Bharatiya Janata Party switched to “Gurugram” – an ancient name for the area meaning “village of the guru” – following a longstanding local campaign, reports said. Gurgaon, as per the official website, derived its name from the name of Guru Dronacharya, the master of archery in the Mahabharata who trained the Pandavas. The city’s name change stems from a proposal by the municipal corporation in 2012.
The state government has also made a decision to rename Mewat as Nuh.
Home to top multinational firms, expensive condominiums and gleaming malls, Gurgaon in Haryana state is popularly called the Millennium City. “Gurgaon was a great center of education where the princes used to be provided education” the spokesman said. While announcing this decision, the official spokesperson has told that the decision of changing the name of the Gurgaon was taken based on the representations that they have received at many forums. The last rearragement of the area came in 2004 when neighbouring district of Mewat was carved out of Gurgaon.
On the other side, Mewat Deputy Commissioner Mani Ram Sharma said, over a month ago, he had sent a recommendation to rename Mewat as Nuh.
Similarly, southern Tamil Nadu’s state capital, Madras, was renamed Chennai and West Bengal’s Calcutta became Kolkata.
Terming it a mindless decision, Takyar says that lots of resources will be wasted to change the name.
Okay, let’s face it, Gurgaon wasn’t the sexiest name to begin with.
Surjewala said Gurgaon has an global branding and this is an exercise in pure superficiality.
