It wasn’t until he was 8 years old that he was diagnosed with autism.
Feinstein’s primary clinical interest for children with ASD and other neurodevelopmental disorders is in expanding access to care for this hugely underserved population by the use of innovative diagnostic approaches and the inclusion of many ASD children in mental health and pediatric clinics that serve a wide variety of children.
Half the children in New Jersey are not receiving comprehensive developmental evaluations as early as they could be, meaning that they may be missing out on important support and services, the report says.

“These are all sending the message that this disorder occurs in about 2 percent of our children”, Bilder said.
Public awareness and education is critical because the sooner a child is diagnosed with autism, the earlier he or she will benefit from intervention approaches, treatment and education, and thus be better able to live with the complex developmental brain disorders.

Some services are available to help children with autism as they grow but once they reach 19 and are expected to be adults and be more independent, those services drop off even though support is still needed. “We are seeing this trend continue, and it’s another gap that we need to bridge”, he said. They are sons and they are daughters; they are not just numbers.
