Law Warns Against IRS Phone Scam

Scams come in many variations, the IRS says, including automated calls that threaten you with arrest or court action to trick people into making a payment. “For the tax scammers, once again it was as easy as going online, plugging in the personal data you’ve already stolen, and pretending to be somebody who’s lost their IP PIN”.

Tax fraud, scams or identity theft on the Stanford campus can be reported to DPS at 650-329-2413. “The state treasurer’s office does not make collections phone calls or take any kind of payment, and the only people we’d like to see arrested are the ones running this scam”, said Oklahoma State Treasurer Ken Miller. Dunn advises people not to provide confidential personal information or money requested, but rather to contact the IRS directly or the police department.

Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card or send money via wire transfer.

Police want to remind you, the IRS will never contact you over the phone for tax related issue.

Never reply to emails, texts or pop-up messages asking for personal tax information.

It’s a known scam and anyone who encounters it should report it directly to the IRS, according to the Shasta County District Attorney’s Office. At TIFTA.gov, you can click on the red box “IRS Impersonation Scam” and fill out the form.

The IRS asks if you do get a scam phone call or email, report it immediately.

“What happens in these situations is someone is using a Social Security number to get a job, but they’re filing their tax return with their [taxpayer identification number]”, Koskinen said, according to the Washington Examiner.

They demand you pay taxes without allowing you to question or appeal the amount you owe.
