It Is Possible to Play Oculus Rift Exclusives on the Vive

To make matters worse, even the handful of decent VR games that are now available will not work on both platforms.

A LibreVR plug-in going by the name of Revive has been unleashed on Github, purporting to be a “proof-of-concept compatibility layer between the Oculus SDK and OpenVR”.

Mr Machkovech said the patch was significant because, before now, although the Oculus could get at games accessible via SteamVR, Vive owners could not get at many Oculus games.

According to Redditor CrossVR who posted the app, “It may work with plenty of other games, but that hasn’t been tested by myself”.

Both devices have started shipping to users in the last few weeks, with each relying on a range of exclusive titles in order to entice users in.

Available through Github, Revive “works by re-implementing functions from the Oculus Runtime and translating them to OpenVR calls”.

As it stands, Oculus users can access the Vive’s SteamVR software hub, but Vive owner’s can’t access the Rift’s Oculus Home content hub. It seems to run well enough, and if more games get patched through Revive, the battle for VR supremacy may end up being more about hardware than software. It doesn’t yet support games that use Oculus Platform online functionality. With the Rift, you’re limited to your controller for movement, with the Vive, Polygon reports that you can actually walk around the virtual space, making the experience far more interactive.

But if those admittedly small downsides don’t deter you, you can find instructions on how to use the software here. There are only two notable players, Facebook with it’s Rift and HTC with the Vive. Let us know in the comments.
