Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said there were some minor injuries, including to police officers, but she did not have additional details.

The upshot is that NY, an overwhelmingly Democrat state whose primaries traditionally have little influence on presidential elections, may play its most decisive role in decades. Republican front-runner Donald Trump has called for building a wall along the border with Mexico and a temporary ban on Muslims entering the country. Thus, with 247 delegates at stake, NY has become a must-win state for Sanders. A big victory in NY could preserve his ability to clinch the nomination before the convention.

Polls have shown Clinton with a lead against Sanders, putting pressure on Sanders to overcome the former secretary of state’s edge.

Sanders may have his best chance of challenging Clinton upstate, where he’s pushing an offensive on fracking and trade deals that have hurt manufacturing jobs, an issue that helped him pull off a surprise victory over Clinton last month in MI. “I noticed that under the bright spotlight and scrutiny here in New York Senator Sanders has had trouble answering questions”, Clinton told reporters. “I don’t think anything we’ve said is going to be effectively used by the Republicans”.

Employees cheered as Sanders criticized Verizon Communications Inc for wanting to take away health benefits, outsource jobs and avoid federal income taxes, calling it “just another major American corporation trying to destroy the lives of working Americans”.

Bernie Sanders descended upon Washington Square Park in Manhattan’s Greenwich Village Wednesday night for one of his campaign’s largest, outdoor rallies.

NY has a closed primary, making it more challenging for Sanders.

“If Trump’s current level of support translates to each of Maryland’s eight congressional districts, he may be able to run the table in the all-important delegate contest”, said Patrick Murray, director of the independent Monmouth University Polling Institute.

“While Clinton maintains a commanding 60 percent to 31 percent lead among black voters and extends her lead among Latino voters to 54 percent to 42 percent, Sanders has made it a neck-and-neck race with white voters”, Siena College spokesman Steven Greenberg said in a statement. Both candidates have continued to attack each others perceived vulnerabilities.
