Mets’ deGrom could be headed to DL

Logan Verrett will make the start against Miami’s Adam Conley.

On Wednesday, that meant six shutout innings against the Marlins.

Terry Collins is hopeful deGrom can throw a bullpen session, though the manager admitted that’s far from a guarantee.

“He hasn’t played catch, to be honest”, Collins said. Before the game, we talked about-even though he hadn’t pitched with great length for a while-that he has a plan.

The Mets have activated right-handed pitcher Rafael Montero, who was with on the team’s taxi squad as of early this evening, and optioned infielder Eric Campbell to Triple-A Las Vegas.

He was the 51s’ opening day starter, giving up two runs – one earned – in five innings Thursday. If deGrom can’t throw, he may wind up on the disabled list. We’ll see how Verrett does in his place this afternoon. Here, he kind of worked the edges, he kind of fell behind in counts, slumped a little bit. “To say he will, I certainly am not 100% sure he will, but we are hoping”.

On if Montero’s issues with mind and body have been resolved, “I have no idea. I felt good this morning, so I’m not concerned”. Henderson retired the first nine batters he faced this season, with seven strikeouts before Dee Gordon singled on Tuesday night, and he suffered the loss in that game.

Hansel Robles was next out of the bullpen, and he struck out Miguel Rojas and Derek Dietrich. Is this Montero’s last chance to prove himself? Last season, he hit.363/.493/.593 in 33 games with the 51s.

“I am not 100% comfortable there yet”, Flores said, “but getting there”.

Collins said Henderson told him he was fine to pitch Wednesday, but the drop in velocity is a concern for a pitcher who has had two shoulder surgeries. “If I come out the next outing and it’s the same thing, then maybe we’ve got to look at some tape and some mechanical things”.
