Clinton, Sanders return to the debate stage amid tensions

At one point, CNN moderator Wolf Blitzer said if they continued “screaming at each other”, no one would be able to hear either of them.

“Secretary Clinton called them out”.

Clinton said she was being consistent and in the eight previous encounters, “I have said the exact same thing”.

Sanders was often caustic as he questioned Clinton’s credibility on super PACs, the Iraq War and Wall Street.

Clinton fired back that she supports increasing the federal minimum wage from the current $7.25 an hour to $12 an hour, but she’d encourage any states whose economy can support a higher minimum wage to adopt a higher standard. “You can make an argument she is not the best on-her-feet politician, but when it comes to substance and asking and answering questions, she’s good at that stuff”.

Clinton, meanwhile, moved to NY after her stint as first lady and became a state senator.

His passionate call for a political revolution has galvanized young people and he spent Wednesday addressing an enormous crowd in New York’s Washington Square at an event his campaign said attracted as many as 27,000 people.

“If you go and read, which I hope all of you will before Tuesday, Senator Sanders’ long interview with The New York Daily News, talk about judgment”, she said, “And talk about the kinds of problems he had answering questions about even his core issue: breaking up the banks”. He could not explain how that would be done. Sanders said he would finally release his tax returns, starting with his 2014 return, which he said he would reveal Friday (April 15). Bernie Sanders engaged Thursday in their sharpest debate yet as they battled over claims of coziness with banks and presidential qualifications and judgment. Mrs Clinton has welcomed the ruling and backs the families’ fight against “irresponsible gunmakers”.

Clinton, who commands huge support among African Americans, apologised for “unintended” consequences of a crime bill passed by her husband Bill Clinton that fanned the prison population and disproportionately targeted blacks.

Mrs. Clinton called that vote “an absolute abdication of responsibility on the part of those who voted for it”, and said no other industry has explicit legal protections against liability if its products kill people.

Sanders did not attack Obama, but he did say that if elected, he would ask the president to withdraw his nomination of Supreme Court Justice Merrick Garland, so that he could advance his own nominee committed to overturning the Citizens United campaign finance decision.

CNN’s Dana Bash asked Clinton why she refuses to release transcripts from her speeches to Goldman Sachs.

Clinton accused Sanders of having made a “commitment to the NRA” to oppose a waiting period for background checks on gun purchases – and slammed the senator for voting against the so-called “Brady Bill” five times. However, for the first time in decades, the NY primary has the potential to change the tone of the race.

Clinton was leading Sanders in polls heading into Thursday’s debate.

“There are certain expectations when you run for president … there are speeches on the other side”, Clinton said, before turning to the topic of Bernie Sanders’ tax returns.
