Jake Gyllenhaal’s Parents Kept Him From Starring In ‘The Mighty Ducks’

Sure, Jake Gyllenhaal can throw a mean left… but could he have done the Triple Deke?

A 10-year-old Gyllenhaal had made his film debut with a brief appearance in 1991’s City Slickers, but the following year, his parents – director Stephen Gyllenhaal and screenwriter Naomi Foner – forbade him from taking a role opposite Emilio Estevez and a young Joshua Jackson in Disney’s hit ice hockey flick.

Jake Gyllenhaal’s big break came in 2001, when he appeared in Bubble Boy and Donnie Darko.

“I definitely remember crying on the kitchen counter”, the 34-year-old said, as transcribed by Josh Cooper of Puck Daddy.

But what if the actor had missed out on a critical role early on in his career?

Howard totally had Taylor’s back by commenting, “I think you should’ve married Taylor Swift…What a power couple!” “But my parents were like, ‘Look, you’re about to enter junior high school, you gotta get your education, that’s the most important thing”. “And I do”. But take a look at the awards section for both actors and you’ll see Jake Gyllenhaal with dozens of awards and nominations from film critic societies and actor’s guilds.

“It’s so easy to judge and make assumptions, but until you experience whatever a person is doing you don’t really know”, he continued.

These days, Jake Gyllenhaal can get just about any role he wants, whether it’s a broken bruiser in Southpaw or a ruthless reporter in Nightcrawler.
