Microsoft Rolls Out Skype Video Calling For Edge

Once this new version of Skype for Web makes its way beyond Edge, it will make it much easier for people to make calls with devices such as Chromebook, or on things like public PCs, such as those found in hotels.

Plugin free skype is powered by the ORTC API in Microsoft Edge. Recipients of the plugin-free calling feature will either need Skype for Web on Microsoft Edge, or the latest version of Skype for Windows or Mac. From now on, you will be able to call your family, friends and others using Skype’s web version without any browser extension, directly signing in to the site via Microsoft Edge on Windows 10.

Microsoft has adopted Web Real-Time Communication (WebRTC) to enable browser-to-browser communication in Skype and Skype for Business. Maybe this is why Microsoft has not been focusing on the Skype client for Linux.

“We will continue to work on enabling audio and video interoperability with Chrome and Firefox browsers, once they both support the H.264 video codec”, the post said.

However, it’s a promising move by Microsoft and compatibility with other browsers & operation systems is anticipated by Skype users. You’ll still need to install a plugin if you want to use Skype to call landline or mobile phones or use Skype’s screen sharing tools. Edge is a far cry from the long-doomed Internet Explorer browser, which was retired past year. Microsoft has announced the support of plugin/extension free calling on Skype for Web.
