However, The CW was quick to say that they haven’t made any decisions yet as to whether or not “The Vampire Diaries” will be picked up for a ninth or even a 10 season.
“The Vampire Diaries” alum Nina Dobrev is confirmed to return to the hit The CW show in season 8.
For the meantime, “The Vampire Diaries” Season 7 is set to air this week with a brand new episode titled “One Way or Another”. “We have made a decision to do one last season to really do the story justice”, he said.
That’s in addition to the statement made by actress Kat Graham, who plays Bonnie Bennett in the series, that she will be leaving her character on the TV series after Season 8. Julie Plec, executive producer of “The Vampire Diaries”, also gave a statement regarding to the news that “The Vampire Diaries” will be ending soon.
“Somehow in my infinite wisdom and end-of-season foggy brain, I managed to make it sound like the show was coming to an end”, Somerhalder stated.
Even though the actor didn’t explain what he meant by what he said, some viewers believe that the storylines for season 8 will be very conclusive. It will indeed be sad not to see the famous vampire brothers, Damon and Stefan Salvatore after 2017.
With so many members of the cast calling it quits, there is a strong possibility that The Vampire Diaries will end after next season.

As for the future of the show, she said, “If we feel strongly that we need to keep going, we’ll advocate for that; if we feel like there’s nothing else we can do, then I might make a call up to the bosses”. “The crew is going to be the hardest thing to let go because we’re a family”. The show could totally go on without her, but her departure would be yet another example of the show running out of steam.
