Sanders Supporters Protest High-Priced Clinton Fundraiser in San Francisco

Sanders often points to his campaign’s comparatively smaller donations as he rails against the influence of big money in politics.

Bernie Sanders surrogates have made headlines lately with a number of off-message gaffes, but on Friday, former President Bill Clinton – arguably Hillary Clinton’s top surrogate – cracked a jaw-dropping joke of his own while stumping in the Bronx. Those fundraisers involved a ton of money: ticket prices started at $33,000 and reached upwards of $300,000, which awarded the purchasing couple the title of “co-chair”, whatever that means. “They’re absolutely right. It is an obscene amount of money”.

Clooney and his wife, Amal, are also hosting a fundraiser for Clinton at their home in Los Angeles on Saturday.

“Starting in 2009 as your secretary of state, I worked with President Obama to bring China and India to the table for the very first time, to get a commitment out of them that they would begin to address their own greenhouse gas emissions”, she said.

Clinton’s event in San Francisco on Friday was protested by a group of roughly 100 people chanting “Hey hey, ho ho, Hillary Clinton has got to go”.

Clinton’s remarks echoed her statements at Thursday’s Democratic debate in Brooklyn, New York. “The Sanders campaign, when they talk about it, is absolutely right”.

Clooney told Todd that the Sanders team is justified in its criticism of the extravagant wealth surrounding Clinton’s campaign.

Both events were benefits for the Hillary Victory Fund, a joint fundraising effort for the Clinton campaign and Democratic National Committee.

Clinton, in contrast, has much stronger ties to the financial system, including six-figure payments for speeches she gave to several financial institutions in recent years. If you look at it, we moved more quickly to $15 in New York City, more deliberately toward $12, $12.50 upstate then to $15.

When Bernie Sanders called Israel’s response in the 2014 Gaza war disproportionate and urged America to be more balanced on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, he smashed a presidential campaign taboo.
