Amazon Launches Standalone Streaming In Challenge To Netflix

The new monthly Prime subscription costs $10.99 per month. Netflix has been crushing the subscription streaming service field—at least in the US—for a while, now, and other companies are constantly working to rebrand, shift focus and try new things in order to keep up.

Amazon Prime Video, which is the first service to be separated from the Prime service, will cost $8.99 per month, according to the company’s website.

‘The two services will compete more closely for customers, and Amazon has the marketing advantage by offering the full Prime service for just a little bit more each month’.

Prime is essentially a package of perks that perhaps most notably includes free two-day shipping with no minimum purchase requirement.

One year later, it unveiled Prime Instant Video, another bonus that came with Prime membership. The new options do away with the need for an annual commitment to Prime, widening its appeal … For that fee, you get a bundle of benefits, most notably free 2-day shipping on many items and an ever-expanding lineup of Prime Instant Video selections.

“It’s Netflix – they’re really good at learning what content works well in other countries, so over time that content resonates better and they’ll get better at getting those subscriptions”, Taulli said.

These numbers suggest that a substantial amount of Netflix subscribers don’t subscribe to Hulu or Amazon Prime, which makes sense given the scale of its United States subscriber base (Netflix had 46 million U.S. subscribers at the end Q4 2015, versus Hulu’s last-released 9 million subscribers as of April, 2015).

Amazon is streaming movies, TV shows from many networks, including “Downtown Abbey”, and original shows, like its Emmy-winning “Transparent”.

You’re about to change the way you watch TV. And if you’re flying on Jet Blue, you can also access it for free while on the flight.

With experiments in original video such as “The Man in the High Castle”, Amazon is building the kind of exclusive content war chest that any Internet and media giant now needs to set itself apart. That means, you no longer have to pay $99.00 all at once.

Even if the new offer from Amazon isn’t enough to put Netflix to bed, at least in the short term it does create a “negative headwind” for its established rival, Mahaney said.
