After Jackson’s RBI in the sixth, Rollins hit into a bases-loaded double play to end the inning, but he made up for it with the ninth-inning shot off A’s reliever Sean Doolittle.
White Sox closer David Robertson allowed Coco Crisp’s leadoff walk in the ninth and then finished with three straight outs for the save, preserving Sale’s first victory at the Oakland Coliseum in five outings and three starts.
Rich Hill will start in his place, taking the mound against Chicago’s Chris Sale at the Coliseum in Oakland.
The game boiled down to two swings of the bat from White Sox hitters. Those in weekly leagues were going to get two starts from Gray regardless, but those in daily leagues will need to make sure he is active for Monday’s game against the White Sox. The guys rally to come back. He threw six shutout innings against Cleveland in 2014 and last season allowed one hit and no runs in eight innings against Texas.
“We did what we do, getting the tying run on base”, Vogt said. Gray, saying that he had been up most of the night vomiting before he headed to the hospital shortly before 10 a.m. Gray showed up at the park late in the day to throw a bit and get his arm loose, but the A’s will go with Chris Bassitt on Tuesday. It’s the start of a 162-game journey and the first game that you’re able to see the new players on your team in real action.
“At some point I want to get everybody in there before we get home”, White Sox manager Robin Ventura said. Like we always do, we get the winning run to the plate.
Trainer Nick Paparesta and manager Bob Melvin both said that if Gray feels up to it, he could start Game 2 on Tuesday. Josh Reddick led off with an infield single off reliever Zach Duke and moved to second with one out when Jones hit Khris Davis with a pitch. He went 2-1 with a 1.55 ERA in four starts last September for Boston.
