Joliet baby trapped in hot vehicle for two hours in critical condition

Forgetting her 7-month-old baby was in the back seat, she locked the vehicle and went about her business for a couple hours until she got a voicemail from the baby’s father.

The mother, thinking she was alone, then left for an appointment in downtown Joliet. “At noon when she left the meeting she listened to the messages and realized the child wasn’t with the father”.

WGN-TV (http://bit.ly/1Ju2BKG ) reports the boy was found unresponsive in the vehicle around noon Tuesday by his mother, who didn’t know he was in the auto.

“It was at that point she realized he may still be in the auto”, Roechner said. She removed the child and contacted a parking enforcement officer in the area who called the police.

“She had been with the boyfriend and their two other kids earlier, before this”.

Medical teams there were able to revive the baby and he was taken to Advocate Children’s Hospital in Oak Lawn where he remains in “very critical condition”, according to Chief Roechner. It is believed that the woman was with her boyfriend at one residence and before heading downtown, she dropped him off at a different residence and was under the impression that he took baby inside with him. Even though the outside temperature was only in the mid-80s, the baby’s temperature internally was 107 degrees, police said. If you have kids, just double, triple-check your cars.

He reminded parents to be vigilant about checking their cars.

“We’re going to put a thermometer in the vehicle at the same time of day for two hours and see what it gets up to”, Roechner said. Police said they interviewed the parents extensively and it will be up to the state’s attorney to determine whether to file charges of child endangerment.
