Volunteer firefighter Kevin Swain, 19, also was shot, and was in serious but stable condition after coming out of surgery Saturday, department officials said.
The suspect, who has not been identified, was questioned by detectives on Saturday, and was released Saturday evening, according to the Prince George’s County, Md., Police Department.
The shooter is in custody and is cooperating with police, Stawinski said.
Memorial services for Ulmschneider have been finalized.
A Mass will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the same church. Swain is a volunteer for the Morningside Volunteer Fire Department.
“This is a day that we have all dreaded in our minds”. God, I hope so. “We were praying so hard”.
“It’s a loss to the family, to the community and to his friends and we don’t understand why”, she said.
The donation site is below. “They acted appropriately. It was the correct decision”, Brady said, adding that they were concerned the person needed immediate medical attention. As that was happening, the person inside fired several rounds.
Prince George’s County police officers rushed to the scene and arrested the suspect.
He leaves behind a wife and 2-year-old daughter. According to Brady, the department never had a firefighter shot while on duty until now.
Firefighters arrived after receiving a routine request from the resident’s brother, who was anxious because his brother, who has blood sugar issues and had recently passed out, was not responding to telephone calls.
Swain, who is from Sykesville, was admitted to the hospital in critical condition.
Grant Walker, acting president of the firefighers’ union, thanked everyone who has reached out to support the department.
John Ulmschneider was shot dead while responding to a medical call at a home in Maryland.
A donation website has been set up to assist Firefighter Ulmschneider’s family.
