Monroe County Elections Officials Prepare for High Turnout in Tuesday’s Primary

“You wouldn’t be able to vote in your new party’s primary until next year”, said Kevin Hardwick, a Canisius College political science professor and Republican Erie County legislator. By the time the NY primary comes around, both parties’ candidates for president have already been chosen. “It requires securing a court order, which takes time that many New Yorkers simply don’t have, as it means loss of income over and above what they lose by simply taking time off to vote”. Sanders may be gaining slight ground in NY in the wake of his seven consecutive victories in Idaho, Utah, Alaska, Hawaii, Washington, Wisconsin and Wyoming. The deadline to switch parties or change affiliation is the earliest in the country – this cycle it was October 9, 2015. In fact, the New York Public Interest Research Group’s legislative director Blair Horner called voter turnout in the state flat-out “lousy”. Those delegates are identified on the ballot by name and by which candidate they would nominate at the party’s national convention.

Warren County issued 517 absentee ballots for this year’s Democratic primary.

“I’ve yet to come across [a voter registration] that’s been maliciously changed”, he said.

“Very, very much so”, said county Republican Elections Commissioner Mary Beth Casey.

I’ll admit that I joked and tweeted and Facebooked away when I learned that Ivanka and Eric Trump weren’t properly registered to vote for their father in the NY primary. Many want to know where they can vote. “As it is now structured, the statute places an onerous and excessive burden on the voter to prove their eligibility”, says Blaire Fellows, one of the lead attorneys filing the suit.

Holding signs that read “Closed Primary = Voter Suppression” and “Independents: First Class Tax Payers…” Clinton lives in Chappaqua, a town north of New York City, spent eight years as a U.S. senator for New York and has her campaign headquarters in Brooklyn. The latest polls suggest that an upset win is out of reach for Sanders, but he is hoping for a repeat of what happened last month in MI, where Clinton was ahead by 21 points in the polls but still lost to Sanders. This constant barrage of propagandist type statistical accounting casts a pall on future voters’ enthusiasm and can and will significantly discourage those voters from turning out on primary day to exercise their constitutional right to vote and have that vote count.

Broome County Board of Elections is reminding voters that only those registered as a Republican or Democrat are eligible to participate.

“We are seeing an increase in voter registration cards and are expecting a higher turnout”, she said in an email to the Town Crier.

The second concern is that thousands of people who may be unfamiliar with primary voting hours arrive at the polls before noon, get discouraged, and never return. Lerner is encouraging them to avoid directing anger at poll workers and to instead demand change from state legislators.

NY state Board of Elections spokesperson, Thomas Connolly said in comments to ThinkProgess that with every alleged complaint about manipulated voter registrations that he’s followed through on, it has been a mistake on the voter’s part.
