Samsung announces new image sensor for thin smartphones
Regardless of that, Samsung’s quest to make phones even thinner has resulted in new camera sensors.

Samsung says the new 1.0μm sensor, dubbed S5K3P3, is available from today for manufacturers to incorporate into their next-generation smartphones. The smaller pixel size will help mobile devices to be slimmer than they have been in the past, as cameras with larger sensors are often the reason behind smartphones being bulkier than they otherwise would have been.
It is important to note that Samsung has achieved the size reduction of the new sensor without compromising on its image quality.
The company did not mention clients, but it is likely Samsung will start using the sensors for its own products.
Samsung S.LSI Marketing Vice President and Head Kyushik Hong said it all showed how Samsung was a trendsetter in the mobile image sensor business.
“Using ISOCELL technology dramatically reduces colour crosstalk of neighbouring pixels by adding physical barriers between each pixel”, the firm said. With z-height below 5mm, the newcomer will allow hardware designers to create devices with minimal camera protrusion.
Combining ISOCELL technology with the industry’s smallest 1.0μm pixels, the new S5K3P3 image sensor will provide manufacturers with a differentiated design option.
