Trump, Clinton win big in NY, move closer to nomination
New York Democratic primary voters rewarded Hillary Clinton Tuesday, helping the state’s former senator erect a barrier against Bernie Sanders’ almost month-long streak of caucus and primary victories.

At her rally, Ms Clinton said “victory was in sight”.
Trump’s political strength, though he boasts of drawing new members to the party, has left some Republicans concerned that his nomination could splinter the Republicans.
The win will rekindle Trump’s hopes that he can win the necessary majority of delegates – 1,237 – to avoid a contested convention.
Cruz and Ohio Governor John Kasich are also hosting RNC receptions in Florida on Wednesday. Ted Cruz was in danger of getting shut out.
But those superdelegates may also be exhausted of intra-party fighting by the convention and want to get on with the business of taking on the Republicans, whose front-runner Donald Trump also had a resounding win in NY on Tuesday.
“We must unite the Republican Party because doing so is the first step in uniting all Americans”, Cruz said in remarks read off a teleprompter.
Donald Trump’s commanding win over rivals John Kasich and Ted Cruz in Tuesday’s NY presidential primary was boosted by groups that have been lukewarm toward his candidacy in the past, NBC’s exit poll shows. Clinton only increased her delegate lead by about 30 in the crucial category of pledged delegates.
Supporters of Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton celebrate at her NY primary campaign headquarters in NY. New York’s primary is closed – which means only registered Democrats can participate, limiting Sanders’ ability to turn out the many independent voters who have helped him win other states.
The Vermont senator now holds a huge 47-point edge over Clinton among voters between the ages of 18 and 34.
“We’ve won in every region of the country”, Clinton says.
NY awards 14 of the 95 delegates to the overall state victor if that candidate has cleared the 50 percent threshold.
And Trump’s victory in NY will not put to rest the undergirding vulnerability in his campaign, that he has little loyalty among his delegates and could lose the nomination on a second or third round of voting at the Republican convention. His campaign feels confident that it’s mastered the complicated process of lining up individual delegates who could shift their support to the Texas senator after a first round of convention balloting. We’ll see how the delegates get allocated, but her lead will significantly grown tonight, and she will add another 200,000 or more her popular vote lead.
The surveys were conducted by Edison Research for The Associated Press and television networks. Current polling averages suggest that in a race between Clinton and Cruz, Clinton would win by two percentage points, but in a race against Trump, Clinton could win by nine percentage points.
Despite the loss in New York, Sanders still stands a chance of securing the Democratic nomination.

“It’s hard for me to imagine how somebody who carried only a few states and is several hundred delegates short can demand to leap over the person who got more votes”, said Sen. “It is extremely unlikely that either candidate will have the requisite number of pledged delegates…so it is going to be an election determined by the super delegates”.
