Policeman killed in shooting at Niger embassy in Egypt

A police conscript was killed and three others were injured in a drive-by shooting Wednesday on Niger’s embassy in Cairo, the interior ministry said.

According to a security official, early investigations showed that the Ajnad Misr (Soldiers of Egypt) militant group was behind the attack, which probably came in revenge for the recent killing of two members of the group by Egyptian security forces. Niger’s embassy is situated in southwest Cairo.

Egypt has seen a spate of deadly attacks since the military’s 2013 overthrow of Islamist president Mohammed Morsi following massive street protests against his rule. That attack was claimed by a group calling itself The Islamic State in Egypt. Previous claims linked to Islamic State attacks in Egypt had been signed as the group’s Sinai Province.

Cairo has not been spared, however, and diplomatic missions have not been immune.

The IS-affiliated group has claimed a vehicle bombing outside the Italian Consulate in Cairo this month, which left one civilian dead and nine others wounded.

Hundreds have been killed and thousands imprisoned in the crackdown.

Jihadists say their attacks are in retaliation for a government crackdown launched against Morsi’s supporters since his ouster.
