PS4K Codenamed ‘Neo’, Will Have An Upgraded CPU, GPU And RAM

Sources familiar with the matter told Giant Bomb that NEO will feature an upgraded RAM, GPU, and CPU, along with the 4K resolution.

These hardware changes will allow developers to take advantage of the Neo’s 4K output, as well as improvements to framerate and graphical fidelity – such as texture clarity and rendering speed. Instead, starting in October, every PS4 title will be required to ship with two different modes – one for the original PS4 and one for the upgraded console. Well, whoever is in charge of giving PlayStation projects their codenames really likes the Matrix. Moreover, the Neo won’t get any exclusive games in the way that Nintendo’s slightly improved “New 3DS” has; it’ll coexist with the base unit and play all the same games, and there will be no separation allowed among users playing the same games across both consoles.

Walker’s sources mentioned that the hard disk drive in NEO will be “the same” as in the base PS4, although Walker isn’t sure if that’s in reference to capacity or connection speed. In fact, both systems will also share the PSN store, will be connected to the same online communities and will offer the same users experience.

What do think of Sony’s rumored PlayStation 4.5 plan?

This October launch date makes sense as The Wall Street Journal, who has an inside source, reveals the console will be “announced before the planned October release of the PlayStation VR”. Base and NEO versions of a game will, it’s claimed, be required to support peripherals equally. Furthermore, Sony has put up a restriction for developers to not release exclusive Neo-only games, exclusives options or unlockables.

That means that games running at native 900p on PS4, as seen with Star Wars Battlefront, Battlefield 4, Watch Dogs and Assassin’s Creed Unity, may become a thing of the past with PS4K.

Rumours of a more powerful PS4 have been circling the internet for over a month now, and while not everyone is happy about it, many are eagerly anticipating it, having already gotten used to nicknames such as PS4.5 and PS4K.

In the documents GiantBomb was sent from Sony, the firm suggests game mode for the NEO will reach 4K/UltraHD resolutions and 4K TV owners should expect the NEO to tailor games to fit the format – but the frame rate will not change.

Despite pervasive rumors and supposed information leaks, Sony has declined to comment on the upgraded version of the PlayStation 4.
