Pop superstar Prince has died at the age of 57. Last week, the singer’s private plane was reportedly forced to make an emergency landing in IL so he could receive emergency medical treatment for a battle with the flu.

As well as singing and writing, he played multiple instruments, including guitar, keyboards and drums.

He was notable for many other critically revered and musically ambitious albums besides, and his amazingly prolific and iconoclastic career, which at one point included turning his recording name into a meaningless symbol in order to escape a recording contract with Warner Bros., ran up until his death.

Prince was an innovative singer and songwriter whose music combined jazz, funk and disco and he is best known for hit songs like “Purple Rain”, “Kiss” and “Raspberry Beret”.

During his career, Prince won seven Grammy Awards and was nominated an incredible 30 times.

A small group of fans quickly gathered in the rain Thursday outside his music studio, Paisley Park, where Prince’s gold records are on the walls and the purple motorcycle he rode in his 1984 breakout movie, “Purple Rain”, is on display.

The musical polymath who was born Prince Rogers Nelson put out a string of releases beginning with his 1978 debut For You up until 1987’s double LP Sign ‘O The Times that constitutes one of the most dazzling creative winning streaks in music history, a period when the acclaimed artist competed for pop dominance with Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen.

Retired basketball star Shaquille O’Neal wrote: “R.I.P PRINCE, another icon gone too soon”. In May 2000, he went back to being Prince.

His most recent album, HITnRUN: Phase Two was released in December 2015, and the artist had been on tour in the United States as recently as last week.

Steele says Prince brought in his family to sing backup on just one song for his “Graffiti Bridge” album, but liked the sound so much they sang on more.
