US Olympic Committee Pulls Boston’s 2024 Olympic Bid
Boston 2024’s initial pitch to the U.S. Olympic Committee, released on Friday after the threat of a subpoena from city officials who had expressed skepticism about the bid, largely dismissed the opposition group.

The worldwide Olympic Committee said Tuesday it was “confident” the US could find a replacement candidate despite Boston pulling out before the nomination deadline.
With Boston in the rear view mirror, the USOC is now looking to other American cities – like Los Angeles – that may be in a position to launch a bid of their own. Several Olympic leaders have quietly been pushing Los Angeles – the city that invented the modern-day template for the Olympics when it played host in 1984 – as the best possible substitute. Durbin says he believes the IOC may look for a host city that has not hosted the games twice, as L.A. has.
“USOC have made it clear that they would still very much like to see a US city host the Olympic Games 2024…” At his news conference, Walsh said the opposition to the Olympics amounted to about “10 people on Twitter”. A customer walked by and applauded, but his attempt at a high five was rebuffed.
Monumental decision: In the meantime, Walsh said it was worth scuttling the Olympic bid to ensure financial responsibility. “This is a commitment that I can’t make without ensuring the city and its residents will be protected”.
But the state doesn’t need the prospect of hosting the Olympics to get serious about fixing transit problems or stimulating the economy. USOC CEO Scott Blackmun said the federation wants to stay in the race. Otherwise, he said, “It’s hard to imagine smart cities and countries getting involved”.
Los Angeles should step in as the United States’ bid for the 2024 Olympics to replace Boston, reported by Britain’s IOC vice-president Sir Craig Reedie.
With steadfast determination and belief in my cause, the opportunity for our city became a reality.
“This never was a bid that boiled up from the bottom”. “Boston is a thriving democracy, and a marketplace of ideas”.
San Francisco and Washington were also in the mix at the end of the USOC’s domestic selection process. Informal polls show that 70 percent of Angelenos would support the Games because most folks know that with the existing facilities and infrastructure, their cost will be far outweighed by their economic and social benefits. The USOC must formally submit its host city bid by mid-September to the global Olympic Committee, which held a board meeting Monday in Malaysia.
The U.S. chances for 2024 had seemed strong, but the Boston debacle caught many by surprise. The athletes had the same means to compete each other and moreover the Greek city states were obliged to stop any fighting during the Olympics.

That message: Hosting the Olympics is a bad way to grow a city. Bearing all that in mind-along with what killed Boston’s bid-it’s probably a long shot that D.C. will win the new bid, especially given how little time there is for a decision to be made.
