The only person who was in the know about the nomination was state president Kummanam Rajasekh- aran.

The announcement of nomination came after the erstwhile action hero of Malayalam films met BJP president Amit Shah in New Delhi recently. Since the government appears to be keen on filling the vacancies, Suresh Gopi’s name is being seen as beginning of the process.

Suresh Gopi said he has been active in public field for about 25 years and reminded that he had raised a voice of protest to protect the Silent Valley by writing a letter to the then prime minister Indira Gandhi. Gopi has been recommended to the Upper House under the category of prominent citizens.

Gopi was also asked by the saffron party to contest in the next month’s crucial assembly elections from Thiruvananthapuram constituency, but the actor had “politely” turned down the offer. “I was given a hint about the nominations earlier”, he added.

“If I were to become an MP, the first priority will be to save the rivers and will start my work from Thiruvananthapuram”, he told reporters on Thursday. “I did not wish to be a candidate”. A senior BJP leader from Kerala, O Rajagopal said that the party was glad that Gopi agreed to campaign for them.
