Honda Accord, Toyota Camry Turning to Turbos

Toyota will have a new turbocharged four-cylinder engine replace certain V6 offerings across the Toyota and Lexus lineups, including the popular Camry and IS. The engine is rated at 235 horsepower and 258 lb-ft for its transverse application in the NX, which is more germane to the Camry than the longitudinal installation in the rear-drive-based IS. While the IS nonetheless presents a three.5-liter V-6, the turbo 4 is predicted to supplant the V-6 within the Camry because the step-up engine from the usually aspirated 4. While we don’t yet know what the output will be in the Camry, it easily should surpass the standard 2.4-liter’s 178 horsepower-although it may not reach the current V-6’s 268 horsepower.

Mazda and Toyota are notable examples, as representatives from each carmaker have previously stated that improvements to economy can still be found in naturally-aspirated engines.

In case of the Honda, the turbo engine that is expected to be assigned to the new Accord will be considerably smaller, standing at only 1.5 liters.

At Honda, the new 1.5-liter turbo engine being installed in the Civic will also makes its way to the Accord. This engine will make its debut in the redesigned 2016 Civic and will then migrate to the Accord and then the CR-V. So, realistically, the Camry with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine shouldn’t have an issue delivering the same performance as the V-6 and significantly better fuel economy.

The turbocharged four-cylinder configuration is already seen in the Hyundai Sonata and the Volkswagen Passat, amongst various other mid-size sedans.
