Prince and sports: ‘He was very small, but he was quick’

His most iconic sports related moment was his Halftime performance during Super Bowl XLI in a rainstorm capped off by his performance of “Purple Rain”.

I’m forever biased toward U2’s stirring and emotional 9/11 tribute in Super Bowl XXXVI, otherwise known as “The One Where a Dynasty Was Born”, but I have no problems saying Prince’s performance that night is the second-best halftime show ever.

Halftime acts talking to sports reporters before the big game has always been awkward – witness Coldplay’s discomfort here – but Prince nipped the whole affair in the bud. “Contrary to rumor, I’d like to take a few questions right now”, he says – and then rips into “Johnny B. Goode”.

By now we’ve seen many superstars take the stage at the Super Bowl, further solidifying their status among the elite performers in music.

Emergency crews who answered the 911 call in Chanhassen, about 20 miles outside Minneapolis, could not revive Prince, the sheriff said.

Prince was slated to perform two surprise “pop-up” shows earlier this week at the Fox Theatre in St. Louis but canceled last week because of health concerns, promoter Steve Litman said.

And so there was the Prince-est possible move in the middle of that glorious “Purple Rain”: launching into a crunchy, soaring guitar solo as a giant beige sheet blossomed in front of him, leaving just Prince’s shadow to look like it was manipulating a giant penis.

Sales of Prince’s music have soared since news broke of the pop star’s death.

Our thoughts continue to go out to Prince’s family, friends, and fans during this hard time.

New Girl (Airdate: Feb. 2, 2014) Continuing the Super Bowl theme, Prince lent New Girl his star power for the show’s post-Super Bowl XLVIII episode.

Three of his songs – “Purple Rain”, “Little Red Corvette”, and “When Doves Cry”, – surged to 7th, 9th and 10th on iTunes’ Top Songs chart.

“Like the rest of the world, we are shocked and saddened today by Prince’s death”, it reads. Jess and her boyfriend at the time, Nick Miller (Jake Johnson), end up running into Prince outside the party and he ultimately asks her to perform with him.

Whenever the Minnesota Twins hit a home run, the ballpark sound system begins blaring Prince’s hit, “Let’s Go Crazy”.

In 1984, Prince released the rock musical drama, Purple Rain, where he portrayed a young musician that is tormented by an abusive situation at home, has a burgeoning romance, and faces a dissatisfied band that resents his rise to fame. The title song from “1999” includes one of the most quoted refrains of popular culture: “Tonight I’m gonna party like it’s 1999”.
