Spurs’ Kawhi Leonard wins Defensive Player of the Year

SAN ANTONIO (AP) – Patty Mills had 16 points, Kawhi Leonard added 13 and the San Antonio Spurs never trailed in beating the Memphis Grizzlies 94-68 on Tuesday night to sweep the first two games of the first-round series in imposing fashion.

“They are probably going to make some more shots than they did (in Game One)”, Green said.

What’s left of the Memphis Grizzlies will face the surging San Antonio Spurs in Game 2 of the NBA Playoffs tonight on the TNT cable TV network and TNT Overtime live streaming. “For what all we’ve been through, and all the injuries, and not having our team at full strength, we still got a group of young guys that have played hard for us”. We’ve got to still execute.

“We are learning a lot from these two games already”.

The Spurs won the series opener 106-74 Sunday at the AT&T Center, handing the Grizzlies their most lopsided playoff loss in franchise history.

The mismatched pairing has resulted in some of the largest spreads dating back to 1991-92 (as far back as our records go), with Game 1 closing the Spurs as 17-point home favorites and are now on the board at -18 for Game 2.

After the game, coach Gregg Popovich gave praise to LaMarcus Aldridge for his excellent performance in the game. After Game 2, he said, “Their whole team talks”, while lamenting a bump he said he received from James at the end of the first quarter.

San Antonio did everything right in the Game #1 rout of Memphis.

Memphis contested 64 percent of San Antonio’s shots, and the Spurs connected on just 17 of 42 on such attempts while hitting 4 of 9 from 3-point range on such shots.

Playing against an undermanned Memphis club decimated by injuries, the Spurs had 19 turnovers, the most they’ve coughed the ball up since March 5, when they had 21 turnovers in a win over the Sacramento Kings. Like some of us, he probably would have chosen to lie down in the comfort of his own home. San Antonio had big runs in the final two minutes of the first and second quarters to put the Grizzlies in an 11-point hole at halftime.

They didn’t play much better during the rest of the game as they were limited to less than 20 points in three quarters and were limited to 32.6 percent shooting for the game.

San Antonio is 6-0 against Memphis this season.

At that point, three different Spurs were on the floor and if there was ever a chance that the Grizzlies were going to get an easy bucket, this was it. With Zach Randolph struggling to the tune of six points on 3-of-13 shooting, 39-year-old Vince Carter and the enigmatic Lance Stephenson were the only two Grizzlies to score in double figures.

Without stars Marc Gasol and Mike Conley, the Memphis Grizzlies were simply not enought for the experienced San Antonio Spurs.
