The member of Patton’s PR team said Michelle’s death “was a complete shock to her family and friends, who loved her dearly”.

While the general interest in crime tends to be towards celebrity or high-profile killers, McNamara said she was drawn towards the less-publicized cases.

For much of the last decade, McNamara has published from a true crime story blog that detailed her efforts to delve into some of the greatest mysteries of our time.

Michelle McNamara, a true crime writer who founded the website True Crime Diary and the wife of writer, comedian and actor Patton Oswalt, has died, the Associated Press reported Friday. In addition to blogging and podcasting on the subject, she also appeared on the Investigation Discovery series A Crime to Remember. She described the feeling of trying to make deductions and solve cold cases “the difference between looking forward or looking back”.

McNamara married the “Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D” actor in 2005. She said that what really interested her about such cases was “there’s more stuff to be unearthed that hasn’t been in the public yet and you can do it”. McNamara is survived by Oswarlt and their 7 year old daughter, Alice.
